Angry Kids Pep Up With Exercise

Being a kid is tough. You’re dealing with puberty and peer pressure. It can all be so overwhelming. And sometimes those pressures can manifest themselves as anger.

Parents know all too well how kids can huff and puff, slam doors, or fight with siblings as an outlet for their frustrations. To compound things, overweight kids may be more susceptible to bullying, which in turn can make them more volatile.

Now, researchers have found that the best way to ease anger is by exercise. Exercise is known to help improve mood and reduce hostility in adults, so why not with kids? And if children are happier and calmer, they are sure to be less hostile.

“It may help children control their anger, and that might be because they’re in a better mood because they don’t get angry as much,” says Dr. Catherine L. Davis of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, the lead researcher on the study.

The proof came in two of three controlled groups of kids who were given 20 minutes of daily exercise, or 40 minutes of exercise for 10 to 15 weeks. The more a child’s fitness increased, the greater his or her anger was reduced.

Interview with Creator of The Reverse Diet, Tricia Cunningham

Most people who’ve experienced a significant life change can tell you their exact “ah-ha” moment. That single moment where an event or something within you determines that it’s time to do what’s necessary to better your life. Tricia Cunningham had one of those, but she calls it her “reverse moment.” Tricia was overweight, weighing 292 pounds at her last doctor’s appointment, but she guesses at one point she had to have crossed over into the 300s. She’d been in a lifelong weight battle, and was only in her 20s. As a child she was a victim of abuse, as well as what she calls “second-hand ignorance,” in which families pass on unhealthy food choices and dietary patterns to younger generations.

One morning nearly ten years ago this mother of two had her “reverse moment” and decided to flip everything she knew about eating. Dinner became breakfast, breakfast became dinner, and for lunch she had a small sensible meal. The weight started coming off. Tricia says she didn’t incorporate much exercise, maybe some light walking. For the past eight years she’s maintained her 170 pound weight loss.

Her success was so remarkable that she shares her plan in the book The Reverse Diet. She teaches people how to reverse the second-hand ignorance that she feels is responsible for much of the obesity in our country and introduces her “no excuses, solutions only” way of thinking.

What about those over-worked moms who already struggle to have dinner on the table after work? She says it’s about planning ahead. She often does prep work at night, wakes up a little earlier in the morning and enjoys a healthy, sensible breakfast of say, parmesan herbed chicken. Tricia’s taken to heart the adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. She consumes her heaviest calories up front, that way she’s burning all day long and by evening, she’s able to eat a small breakfast of eggs and fruit or oatmeal, and has plenty of time to digest those smaller calories before bed. Tricia also says her two-minute meals will beat those Rachael Ray 30 minute meals!

Tricia also takes pride in that this personal journey to lose weight and regain her health has allowed her to break the cycle with her children. Her two teenage daughters read food labels, know the daily requirements for nutrients and even share with friends at school smarter food choices.

App Review: Weightbot

As promised in the latest episode, here is our review of Weightbot by Tapbots.  I have been planning to purchase an iPhone for the last 3 or 4 months.  My current contract was up on 10/18 and so I bought one and the first application that I purchased was Weightbot.  Imagine my surprise when I received an e-mail from Jeff telling me he bought an iPod Touch.  He informs me that he purchased the Weightbot application also.  So here’s my review of Weightbot.  Perhaps Jeff will chime in with his thoughts.

There’s not much to dislike about Weightbot.  It’s main feature would have to be it’s simplicity.  It does one thing, provide a platform to record your weight.  Weightbot uses the features of the iPhone interface to it’s fullest.  You start out by inputing your goal weight, your height, and an optional passcode to keep unwanted eyes out of your business.  After that, you are presented with the main interface of Weightbot.  By clicking on the large numbers on the screen a sideways scale will appear along the bottom of the screen.  By flicking your finger across the scale you can input your weight down to the tenth of a pound.  Simply click the large numbers that now has your weight and it will be recorded for the day.  Also included on the display is your current BMI.

Each day record your weight this way and soon you’ll have a nice looking graph of your weight loss.  If you rotate the iPhone 90 degrees, Weightbot will display the graph.  Cool beans.  If you’d like to delete one of the weigh-ins, simply scroll to that date on the bottom of the screen and shake the iPhone.

What’s missing from Weightbot?  The only thing that I can imagine to make Weightbot better would be a Bluetooth scale that Weightbot could communicate with and automatically enter your weight.

Tapbots has a few features that are listed as Coming Soon on the web site.  They include:

  • Ability to backup/restore your data
  • Moving average line in the graph view
  • Multiple graph views (Month/Year)
  • Removal of the 90 day limitation to modify data
  • Gestures to jump faster through dates/weight measurements in the scroller.
  • Alternate data view with information like lbs lost to date, lbs lost per week/month, lbs. left to reach goal, etc.
  • Localization
  • Option to attach other details to each weight entry (notes for example)

Running or Walking - Which Burns More Calories

A common misconception is that you burn way more calories when you go for a run compared to going for a walk - but this isn’t actually true.

It is true that you will burn calories at a faster rate if you run, but whether you cover a 3 mile distance in an hour or a half hour, when you get to the finish line your body did the same amount of work energy-wise.

The scientific way to look at Work is the formula: Work = Force X Distance.  It takes energy to move your body over distance.  If your body burns 10 calories to move a certain distance, going 5 times farther will burn 5 times the calories regardless of your speed.

The biggest factor in how many calories you burn is your weight.  The heavier you are, the more energy it takes to move your body.

The Technical formula to figure this out is: Kilograms X Kilometers X 1.036

Here is the Imperial version:  0.76 Calories X Lbs X Miles

Here is the Combination version:  0.47 Calories X Lbs X Kilometers

For example, here is the Imperial formula for a 150 lb person who walks/runs 3.1 miles:
Total Calories = 0.76 X 150 X 3 = 353 calories burned

Here is the combination formula for a 150 lb person who walks/runs 5 kilometers:
Total Calories = 0.47 X 150 X 5 = 353 calories burned

Don’t get me wrong, there are benefits of moving your body at a faster rate. You won’t get a cardiovascular workout by moving slowly, and you won’t get any “after-burn” effect from a casual stroll, but if your concern is getting in some activity that will burn extra calories, walking works!

So if you are watching tv at home and using a treadmill, you can easily walk 5 K or 3 Miles in an hour without dripping in sweat and burn the same calories as a run.
